Report:

Winter fly fishing Colorado offers some of the best winter fly fishing in the west.  The day was beautiful, warm, sunny, and we actually had to shed most of our layered winter clothing.  Colorado fly fishing guides Tad Howard and Fred Gray took the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful day and fish on the South Platte River.  We fished for about 3 hours during the warmest part of the day, and the fish were certainly cooperative.  Multiple rainbow, beautiful brown, cut-bow, and cutthroat trout were landed on this short winter outing.

The most productive technique was nymph fishing with small flies and a light leader.  The trout have very little pressure in the winter and didn’t seem very selective as to pattern.

Winter is a great time for anglers to experience solitude on the river and have a shot at trout that are not feeling pressured. Our guides
are on the river year round and can make sure you have a great winter fly fishing experience.

Winter is a great time to check out some of our private water at a reduced access fee; there is also much better availability during the
winter months.  This season there are great stream flows and quite a bit of great fly fishing happening within a couple hours of Denver.
Some of our guides are even reporting some very good dry fly fishing.

We look forward to seeing you on the river this winter.  The trout look beautiful and you just might be surprised at how feisty a big winter trout can be!
