Winter Fishing Update

As I type winter has briefly settled into Colorado’s Front Range but locals familiar with the area know that doesn’t mean we will be shivering for the next 4 months straight.  Snow may be on the ground now but the forecast is calling for weather back in the mid 60’s by the end of the week.  Even with cold temperatures, there is pretty much always a spot to fly fishing in the winter.  The most popular winter fisheries are on rivers below dams, meaning the rivers below them won’t normally freeze over.  The South Platte at Deckers, South Platte Dream Stream, and the Blue in Silverthorne are all popular public water winter fisheries.  The winter fly fishing report for each of these stretches has a common theme and that is low flows.  We had a below average snowpack from last winter which means reservoir levels are currently very low resulting in flows beneath those reservoirs to also be low.  You can still catch fish, just be sure to downsize your tippet and fly sizes.  Being able to find fish before you cast will also greatly increase your success rates this time of year.

North Fork of the South Platte:

Despite the low water conditions, Denver still needs its drinking water so DenverWater has increased flows out of Roberts Tunnel meaning our popular private water fisheries on the North Fork of the South Platte have been able to reopen.  The Meadows, Rawhide Ranch, and Shawnee Meadows are all currently fishing fantastic and give you a chance at catching the fish of a lifetime, just under an hour drive from Denver!  The water is flowing crystal clear allowing us to sight fish to these trophies.  Even better, starting Nov 1st the landowners reduce the rod fee’s to $150 a person (with a minimum of 2 people).  Want to take advantage of this incredible winter fishery?  Give us a shout at (303) 325-5515!
