Colorado Trout Hunters guide Matt Sandersen with a giant Dream Stream Brown Trout

It was a great fall on the Dream Stream!

The diversity of water within 2 hours of Denver is truly endless.  You have everything from technical tailwaters to high country streams to big reservoirs.  One thing that comes with reservoirs is the chance to target large fish that migrate out of the reservoirs and into the rivers.  The Dream Stream is a famous one because it not only has large fish that enter the river system from Elevenmile Reservoir, but you have a dam below Spinney Mountain Reservoir on the upstream end.  During the spring run, the fish mostly stay downstream towards Elevenmile, but during the fall run, the large brown trout swim a ways upstream and spread out throughout the entire system.

We had some great flows out of Spinney Mountain Reservoir this year which encouraged plenty of nice brown trout to feel comfortable enough to enter the river.   We like the keep the exact timing of the run a secret (many different factors that influence this, book a trip to find out!) but the fish that came in this year were impressive in both the number and the average size.  It was one of the best runs we have seen in years!  Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come as these brown trout are 100% wild.  With it being a self sustaining population, you should NEVER fish to actively spawning fish.  I have no problem educating people on the river who I see someone doing this.  The sad reality is a lot of anglers do not care and would rather catch an easy fish off a spawning bed than do it the ethical way.  These fish spend a lot of time in the river and can be ethically targeted in the deep water below spawning redds without risking harm to future fish generations.  But once they begin to spawn, LEAVE THEM ALONE!

Here are some highlights of fish we caught this year, both on guided trips and guides fishing on their days off. Want to learn more about targeting migratory fish on the Dream Stream?  Let us know! (303) 325-5515
